Sealing

This test is used to evaluate the sealing of the case for sealed relays.

As a rule, the test is performed by immersing the test piece in a water bath at a specified temperature. The immersion depth must be at least 10 mm.

The test piece is observed during the entire specified test period. No air bubbles should leak out.

This test is performed according to the IEC 68-2-17, Qc test.

In addition, the sealing of the relay case can be specified in the form of the type of enclosure according to the so-called IP code in accordance with DIN VDE 0470-1 (corresponds to IEC 529). The first code digit specifies the degree of protection against the penetration of solid foreign bodies. In power relays, the codes are usually:
  • 0: not protected
  • 5: sealed against dust
  • 6: dustproof
The second code digit specifies the degree of protection against the penetration of water. In power relays, the codes are usually:
  • 0: not protected
  • 3: spray water
  • 4: splash water
  • 5: hose water
  • 6: high-powered hose water
  • 7: occasional submersion
  • 8: continuous submersion
